My experience with solar chargers started about a year ago. I had a 5 watt charger that a friend had given me for my generator battery. I never used it for that.
Fast forward one year later – I have since retired and my truck sits in my driveway a lot more than it used to.
My battery kept going dead so I tried the 5 watt charger and waited a week to see if it either worked or if my battery was dead again.
To my surprise it worked! My truck started right up but the problem was that the old battery was 4 years old at that point and I knew that this was going to keep happening unless I either went back to work or I was going to keep the solar charger on my truck battery.
The sun and the heat warped my 5 watt charger so I needed a new one. I saw this one and it was on sale at the moment I purchased it here on Amazon. You should know that any solar charger you buy will be subjected to extreme heat and light so please keep that in mind when you buy one of these things. I recently went to remove mine during a hot afternoon and nearly burnt myself because the unit was so hot after being on my dashboard in the midday sun in front of my dashboard heat shield (see pic).
20 watts seems to be the limit for a solar charger before it needs a separate controller to regulate the flow of power to what whatever it is you’re charging.
Also for those who care at 20 watts the charger is putting out about one amp of DC electricity which would be the equivalent of a trickle charger output from a battery tender.
I like this unit because the solar panel is flexible instead of being rigid or made from hard plastic like my 5 watt charger. The holes in each corner give you the flexibility on how you want to position for maximum sunlight exposure. In my case I laid the panel down on my dashboard and put my big sunshade behind it to protect the dashboard and interior of the truck from the heat and sun fade. The sunshade keeps the panel propped up for best sun exposure.
I didn’t write the review until I tested it out the same way I tested the 5 watt panel, by waiting a week to see if my new battery (Northstar AGM- NOT RECOMMENDED due to it going dead within 10 days of inactivity and VERY poor warranty support-see my review) would be able to start my truck (Nissan Murano). The Murano has a 3.5 liter engine, not a big engine by any standard yet I have to keep a solar charger on it in order to prevent the battery from draining on me.
The charger has been on my truck for about 3 weeks now and whenever I decide to go for a drive my truck starts right up with no issues. I disconnect the charger before I start the truck and when I come home I reconnect it. A bit of a pain in the neck but it guarantees that my truck will always start no matter how long it sits in my driveway
I can see this charger might have other uses too. It could be used in a camping situation to charge battery packs or an emergency situation as well.
The only minor quibble I have is that the panel does come with a small controller attached to the back to let you know that the charger is charging. There are 3 lights on this little controller. One to let you know that it’s receiving sunlight so that it can function. Another LED to let you know that it’s charging whatever battery you have it attached to. Then there is a third LED, a green one. Once an item is fully charged the green light is supposed to come on. I have yet to see this green light come on but the charger does work as it’s intended.
Update 5-29-21- The green light on the controller does appear to function! I noticed the other day after having my truck sitting with the charger attached the green light on the back of the solar panel was on! Apparently my battery must have been low and it took time for the charger to top off the battery.
Highly recommended

As the built-in charge controller comes with indicator lights, if find the LED on the 12 volt plug to be redundant and an energy drain. The unit comes with a blocking diode, which is good, but the plug LED is not blocked and uses juice 24/7 making a net daily charge very slow. I took the plug apart and cut out the LED. That way I can leave the charger plugged in continuously with little overnight loss. A magnetic strip would be nice to help anchor it to the vehicle. Seems well built and bullet proof. Slow to charge, discharged batteries, I don’t there will be any problem in overcharging them.
Revised: On further research it appears having the SAE plug reversed is often used, to the extent that SAE polarity reversal adapters are commonly available.
I just figured out that the panel and the supplied accessories are wire backwards to SAE normal. This means for example, that when you attach the battery clips to your car battery, you risk having the exposed SAE pin, now positive, to ground out on any part of the car. This will cause sparks and possible burns and even explosion due to battery hydrogen. Plus the accessories won’t work, possibly dangerously, with other SAE products like battery chargers.

This solar panel is slow charging my truck battery and is able to keep it maintained. I am running 2 Garmin dash cams (front and rear) while the truck is parked. I leave these cameras running 24/7 for the security of my truck when parked outdoors. The cameras will save the video if there is any disturbance. The two cameras when standby and simply monitoring pull about 1/2 Amp from the battery. Over a number of days when the truck is parked the battery can start to run down because of the dash cams.
This panel in full sun light is putting out about 2.4 Amps. On a bright cloudy day it is putting out anywhere from about 0.8 Amps to about 1.8 Amps depending on the density of the clouds. In most cases during the day this panel is maintaining the cameras to prevent the battery from being run down. When it is putting out more than about 1.5 Amps it is trickle charging the battery. The vehicle phantom current from its own electronics is about 0.06 Amps average. The user manual indicates after about 2 weeks of vehicle non use the battery may be run down. When parked for more than a few days the battery should have a charger connected to it.

In most of the Japanese vehicles the 12 Volt cigar lighter socket turns off with the key. With most of the US vehicles the 12 Volt cigar lighter socket remains live. In some of the Japanese SUVs and trucks they offer both a switched 12 Volt cigar lighter socket, and one that is always on.
In my truck I have an always on 12 Volt cigar lighter socket. Also, you can have your dealer wire in a fuse protected auxiliary 12 Volt socket for you. They can also wire in a pair of 12 Volt wires and you can custom connect them to the panel or operate any other type of 12 Volt devices.

I would recommend this solar panel for battery maintenance. I found with the proper adapters it would be possible to put a number of these panels in parallel to have higher current.
I have a friend with a large mobile trailer home and he wired up 20 panels in parallel to charge a bank of 12 Volt Lithium ION batteries. He is able to run his lighting, a computer, an RV fridge, and an HD TV with a sound system. All is using 12 Volts. His cooking and grilling is using propane.

I have been researching, debating, shopping, reading reviews for a very long time and felt like I found what I was looking for in this 10W charger so I purchased a few months ago.
I buy and sell a few cars as a hobby and in some cases the car sits a very long time before I get around to selling. I do use pug in battery maintainers on motorcycles and cars in a garage that are close to AC power but I needed a good solar charger as I have a few cars in my back yard that I try and start and run but during winter months I forget, This 10w version is perfect. I check the cigarette lighter, 12v outlet in my car / suv to make sure the inside 12v outlet does not turn off with key ( Use a cell phone charger with led light to check yours ) but I prefer to use the inside the car plug simply so the unit does not sit in the rain, as I understand it has no issue with rain but I siply keep it in the front window and it works fine.
The #1 thing I needed with a charger is that it had to have the built in maintainer “smart” electronics as I did not want to overcharge my battery. Looks like many other small solar charges does not have that smart box but this unit does! I was surprised to the build quality as it looks and feel better that I was expecting. I have an older SUV that the battery was getting old and weak and failed to start. I did charge the old battery with a plug in charger but I then connected this solar charger and the car sat but this unit kept the battery charged, The 10w version I find perfect for keeping car batteries ready to crank!
Happy With the product!

I have a vehicle that is not driven often. I had a 5 watt panel with a Delrin charge controller. It worked, but didn’t have enough oompf for the vehicle. Worked great on motorcycles though.
Went with this product and after a week the battery received enough charge to start. Had to jump it the week before.
Quality seems fine, just have it on the dash. Came with different connectors for direct connection to battery or cig lighter jack. One jack in my vehicle is always hot, so I used the cig adapter.
Would recommend.

Purchased a few months back and installed on my 65 hp tractor that is not used every day and sometimes goes a month or two without starting. So far it has worked great! The batteries had been ran down before when a light was left on for a week and drained the batteries, had to charge the batteries but they still lacked full strength and would barely start. I added the solar charger and each time I have used the tractor since it has started fine. I did notice during the hot days and running the ac on high the charger would start charging after an hour on high fan speed, product works great!
