I’ve bought these value <$30 solar pumps in the past and have been generally disappointed. For me, they typically have 2 shortcomings: lack of vertical pressure (to connect to an existing fountain where the top is more than a couple inches above the water level) and lack of functionality in anything but direct, direct sunlight. This pump hits both of these deficits head on. It has no problem pumping the water 12” up to the mouth of the fountain (and from the pressure I’m sure it would go 18” no problem) and it works even in overcast conditions. Yes, if you have 30% sunlight it’s a lot slower flow, but it’s not no-flow which has been my experience with similar pumps. Glad I found this before I upgraded to a 10-15 watt $60+ fountain.

I made a little bird bath fountain in the back yard, using a large cheap plastic planter and river rock. Other than this pump, noting else was needed. (I did have to plug the planter drain using silicone sealant / adhesive.) The little 6w version I have worked immediately when the solar panel was connected. (Note: Pump must be underwater before connecting to panel. You risk damaging the pump otherwise.)
One Important thing to keep in mind. This solar panel will not work in the shade. Any shade. Just a little shade. When it’s in full sun, it’s pretty impressive for such a tiny pump. But if you don’t have spot with full sun, at least some time of the day, it won’t work for you. You do have about 8-10 feet of cord and the panel is easy to move around if you’re willing to chase the sun.
I took one star off because while the clear plastic tubing fit well on the pump, none of the spray heads or adapters provided would fit. Normally I would have taken more stars off for a serious issue like this, but in fairness this pump may still work fine for you. Here’s the deal…if the pump itself is just below the waterline…no more than two inches or so, there is a hard plastic extension provided. And happily the spray heads will fit on it OK. If you need to lift the water more than that, 4′ of clear flexible tubing is provided. In my case I needed about two feet of plastic tubing. This is when you run into trouble. The spray heads won’t fit and can’t be used. In many applications, however, just having the water come out of the end of the tubing is fine. For instance, maybe you have a little waterfall, and just need to feed the water into that. Or, as in my case, I just propped the tubing straight up and it makes a nice little arch of water…like coming out of a hose. The birds don’t care!

This fountain was a workhorse all summer, keeping the water in my birdbath moving. The spray was so strong I had to adjust how much sun fell on the solar panel; otherwise, it all splashed away. It worked perfectly right out of the box and I loved how it helped attract my local bird population. It’s a blast to watch half a dozen of them flapping, hopping and pushing each other out of the way to have the bath to themselves.

I placed this in a deep blue birdbath which sits in what I call my Bird Food Court right outside my study window. The fountain works beautifully when the sun is fully on the panel and even keeps burbling when the sun is diminished by clouds or trees. I learn right away that I need to check and clean the little spongy filter, especially in late spring, early summer when the pollen went crazy here. But holding it under a strong stream of water took care of most of the gunk and the fountain returns to full strength. I live surrounded by trees so I didn’t have much luck where I first placed the solar panel. But then I figured out to mount it on a hollow pole I found in the garage which puts it up about 4 feet to catch more sun. Perfect! I tried all the nozzles, but only use the extender and the flare shaped nozzle which mostly creates a 3 to 4 inch burble. Recently the fountain has been reaching more than a foot which I think might be caused by something narrowing the opening or the sun is at just the right angle to get maximum power. The only drawback to this is I have to make sure to keep the water topped up. Bottom line: I love it and the birds, squirrels, and insects are starting to get used to it. I also love that I have not created a breeding pond for mosquitoes, our state bird.

This solar pump works better than the original pump that came with my water fountain. Great water flow. Didn’t need all the pieces it came with, just the pump and hose. The pump is powerful which allows for a good stream. Great replacement pump. I recommend

light sprinkle, will not do as a waterfall, appropriate for small bird bath, sprinkle will clog easily it’s so small.Cannot be seen across the yard. Easy to set up and solar works straight away. No need to charge first.

I ordered two of these. Easy to set up. As long as there is sunshine, these work great. Package contains all the hose and spray heads you need for many configurations.
